Semiconductor optoelectronics is one of the key technologies in the region of Berlin-Brandenburg. Several regional long-standing collaborations of industrial companies with research institutions aim at the development of semiconductor emitters, until now mainly for the infrared spectral range. The consortium Advanced UV for Life was initialized by some partners of the regional growth core "Berlin WideBaSe". Furthermore, additional partners working in different application fields of UV technology have become members of the consortium.
The initial consortium prevailed in the “Twenty20 – Partnership for Innovation” competition announced by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). 19 initial consortia were called upon to present their concepts – before, they were selected from 59 submitted initial concepts. Ten of which have been successful, among them Advanced UV for Life.
With the development programme “Zwanzig20 – Partnerschaft für Innovation” (Twenty20 – Partnership for Innovation) the BMBF is supplementing the promotion programmes of “Unternehmen Region” (Entrepreneurial Regions) with a new approach which is geared to national, inter-, trans- and multi-disciplinary cooperations between the partners, and which is committed to openness and transparency. In this regard the focus is on the joint identification of future topics and future essential areas, as well as the corresponding elaboration of concrete, economically viable solutions.
