Ultraviolet Photonics - Photonics Days 2026

The UV session at the Photonic Days 2026

Photonics Days organized by OpTecBB,
Ultraviolet Photonics Event by Advanced UV for Life

Organized by OpTecBB in collaboration with Advanced UV for Life, this session brings together leading scientists, developers, and industry users from across the globe to share insights, present breakthrough research, and shape the future of this rapidly advancing field. Driven by growing demand in high-impact applications such as water purification, surface and air disinfection, medical sterilization, and indoor air quality systems, AlGaN-based ultraviolet light emitters have made remarkable progress. Emerging uses in areas like food safety, semiconductor manufacturing, and environmental monitoring further accelerate innovation. This session will highlight the latest achievements and provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art developments in UV-LED technologies and their applications. Chairs: Thomas Neicke (Advanced UV for Life), Prof. Dr. Michael Kneissl (Technische Universität Berlin, Member of Advanced UV for Life), Dr. Sven Einfeldt (Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik, Advanced UV for Life).

ICFUST 2026

International Conference on Far-UVC Science and Technology

Organizing Committee: Nick Volet, Aarhus University (Conference Chair); Peter Tønning, UV Medico A/S

ICFUST 2026 pursues a highly relevant objective: to thoroughly explore the potential of Far-UVC science and technology for protecting lives in healthcare. By preventing healthcare-associated infections, reducing the transmission of pathogens via air and surfaces, and protecting patients and medical staff, Far-UVC can make a tangible contribution to improving patient safety. As an international forum, the conference brings together basic research, safety validation, regulatory aspects, and clinical and environmental applications. With the highest scientific standards and critical, independent evaluation, the focus is particularly on practical benefits: the transfer of reliable research results into practical, effective solutions for infection prevention and safe clinical environments.

Photonics West 2026

Focus on Ultraviolet Photonics: From UV-A to far-UVC at Photonics West 2026

Photonics West 2026 will once again be the central meeting place for ultraviolet photonics. From UV-A to far-UVC, from fundamentals and components to applications in medicine, industry, and quantum technologies. Between January 17 and 22, 2026, attendees at the Moscone Center (San Francisco) can expect an exceptionally wide range of UV-related lectures and posters.

Light Sources & Nonlinear Optics: The program ranges from DUV and VUV pulse generation (e.g., four-wave mixing, parametric amplification, SHG) and 148-nm VUV lasers to tunable systems from deep-UV to mid-IR. Integrated nonlinear concepts and UV beam shaping are also in focus.

UV LEDs, Lasers & Materials: Numerous contributions address AlN/AlGaN epitaxy, UV-C and DUV LEDs, deep-UV lasers (VCSELs, photonic crystal lasers), as well as design and reliability topics – from light extraction and optics to degradation mechanisms.

far-UVC: Another focus is on far-UVC technologies for medicine and hygiene: from “human-safe” 230-nm LEDs, high-power modules, and field-emission devices to the evaluation of antimicrobial effectiveness and biocompatibility. This is complemented by integrated AlN photonics for far-UVC frequency conversion.

Imaging & Life Sciences: Deep-UV microscopy, UV photoacoustics, endoscopy approaches, and label-free diagnostics demonstrate the direct path from the source to clinical application.

Industry & Processes: UV laser processing, disinfection, DUV lithography, nanoimprint, and metrology round off the program.

Conclusion: Anyone interested in UV, UV-C, and far-UVC photonics will find a unique density of relevant sessions in 2026.
