Advanced UV for Life Emphasizes Physical Prevention Options at WHO Event

From Data to Disinfection: Why AI Needs Physical Allies in Pandemic Preparedness

Berlin, October 2025 – The World Health Organization (WHO) Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence recently hosted a high-level event on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Large Language Models (LLMs) in public health.

Among the international participants in Berlin was Thomas Neicke, Managing Director of the Advanced UV for Life association, who, in many discussions, drew attention to a crucial, often overlooked aspect of pandemic preparedness: physical technologies for infection prevention.

While the WHO and leading experts discussed AI-powered outbreak detection, risk assessment, and data ethics, Thomas emphasized that true global health resilience can only be achieved through a synergy between digital and physical solutions.

“Artificial intelligence enables early detection, but technologies such as FUV and UVC radiation can help limit infections before they occur. Together, they form a strong prevention chain.”

UVC radiation has long been known for its germicidal effect: it can inactivate viruses, bacteria, and multi-resistant pathogens in the air, water, and on surfaces. Somewhat less known is FUV or Far-UVC radiation, which, due to its properties and under controlled conditions, is referred to as a low-risk sister of classic UV radiation for humans. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it increasingly came into scientific focus. It has the potential to be an additional, sustainable, and chemical-free method for improving hygiene and reducing infection risks – for example, in hospitals.

Advanced UV for Life is a network that drives innovation in ultraviolet technologies. It connects research institutes, industry, and healthcare professionals to develop safe and efficient UVC systems for daily use.

The association’s participation in the WHO event underscores its commitment to global cooperation and evidence-based prevention strategies that combine data intelligence with practical health protection.

“AI and UVC serve the same mission – to protect lives through knowledge and technology,” Thomas said. “The combination of forward-looking digital tools and proven physical methods can significantly help to better address future pandemics.”

A thank you to the organizers and speakers

The WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence also celebrated its fourth anniversary as part of the event – together with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Robert Koch Institute, and the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin as founding partners.
Special thanks go to Dr. Oliver Morgan, Managing Director, and his team at the WHO Hub Berlin, as well as the contributors and speakers: Dr. Michael Borowitz, Prof. Yannis Paschalidis, Dr. Zainab Samad, Prof. Nicki Tiffin, Dr. Julia Fitzner and Dr. Philip A. for their inspiring contributions on the role of AI in public health. Special thanks also go to the long-standing partners Mr. Paul Zubeil, Prof. Dr. Lars Schaade, Prof. Dr. Johanna Hanefeld and Prof. Dr. Beate Kampmann for their continuous support at the WHO Hub.
