Between technological progress, regulatory dynamics, and new applications, ICULTA 2026 demonstrated the significant shifts currently occurring in the field of UV technologies. Organized by Advanced UV for Life, the conference in Berlin brought together science, industry, and users, making it clear that UV LED technologies are increasingly evolving into a more broadly positioned field of innovation and application.
From April 21-24, ICULTA 2026, organized by Advanced UV for Life, gathered the international UV community in Berlin, bringing together researchers, technology developers, users, and industry representatives to discuss current developments and future perspectives of UV technologies.
The conference once again demonstrated the vast thematic breadth and increasing maturity of the field: from semiconductor and system innovations to medical, environmental, and industrial applications. With participants from science, industry, and public institutions, ICULTA provided a platform for scientific exchange, technology transfer, and networking across disciplines, underscoring the role of Advanced UV for Life as an interface between research, innovation, and application.
A special setting for this exchange was also provided by the venue: the historic rooms of Karl Storz in Berlin, a former hospital of the Empress Augusta Foundation that has been transformed into an extraordinary conference location.
The combination of historic architecture, modern medical technology, and an open campus atmosphere provided an inspiring framework for scientific exchange and personal encounters far beyond the sessions.
The program covered topics ranging from UV LED light sources, device physics, and reliability to water and air disinfection, medical applications, and sensor technology, as well as regulation, standardization, and new industrial applications.
A particular strength lay in the connection between fundamental research and application-oriented perspectives. Discussions addressed not only progress in efficiency, lifetime, and system integration but also questions of implementation, regulation, and market launch.
Tutorials on UV fundamentals, semiconductor technologies, standards & metrology, and microbiological effectiveness opened the conference and were complemented by a poster session during an extended “Poster Lunch,” which provided additional space for scientific exchange.
As in previous years, the industrial exhibition, networking times, and roundtable discussions were central elements, underscoring the community character of ICULTA.
Many contributions painted a common picture: UV technologies are increasingly evolving from a technology-driven niche field into a more broadly established field of innovation and application.
Several lines of development characterized this dynamic:
Technical Know-how and System Understanding Become Central
A central theme was the understanding of UV-C (LED) systems in real-world applications—from optics and thermal management to electronics, modules, and system integration. It became clear that the focus is increasingly shifting from the individual component to the system level.
Many contributions provided not only scientific insights but also practical guidance for companies and development managers looking to integrate UV LED technologies into their own innovation developments—for example, regarding system design, performance optimization, reliability, and integration issues.
In this way, ICULTA once again underscored its role not only as a scientific conference but also as a platform for application-oriented innovation impulses.
Commercial Maturity Moves into Focus
Lifetime, optical power, wall-plug efficiency, and performance metrics were increasingly viewed in the context of market readiness, economic viability, and industrial scaling. This made it clear that many UV LED technologies are no longer regarded merely as subjects of research, but increasingly from the perspective of concrete implementation and broader application.
Regulation and Compliance Gain Importance
Regulatory issues—such as RoHS and UV LED regulations for drinking water applications—also emerged as strategic topics. Particularly in the European region, concrete regulatory roadmaps and implementation perspectives for drinking water applications were presented.
Applications and Market Acceptance are Expanding
At the same time, the program demonstrated the growing breadth of applications—from medicine and hygiene to water treatment and household solutions—illustrating how the field is expanding far beyond traditional disinfection applications.
ICULTA 2026 – Highlights & Trends
Five trends that particularly characterized ICULTA 2026:
The focus is increasingly shifting from individual components toward system understanding, integration, and real-world application.
Water, medicine/hygiene, and air and surface applications were represented with remarkable balance, reflecting the diversification of the field.
The close integration of research, technology development, and industrial implementation characterized the program in a special way.
There was a noticeable shift in scientific contributions toward application proximity, system development, and questions of industrial implementation.
Standardization, validation, and compliance were increasingly discussed not just as boundary conditions, but as active drivers of technological development.
At a Glance
• International specialist audience with a strong European profile
• Tutorials, scientific program, posters, and industrial exhibition
• High proportion of interdisciplinary contributions along the innovation chain
• Strong participation from science and industry
• Community format with a special focus on exchange and networking
ICULTA thrives not only on the presentations but on the exchange between them.
The composition of participants also underscored the international reach of ICULTA. Compared to 2023, the share of German participants remained high, while contributions from Denmark and Italy in particular were more strongly represented, and the presence from the USA remained consistently high.
At the same time, a more focused international distribution with a stronger European profile was evident.
Through the commitment of speakers, participants, program chairs, sponsors, and partners, ICULTA 2026 became a highly interactive and inspiring meeting.
A special feature was once again the open yet familiar character of the exchange that defines the Advanced UV for Life community. It is precisely this mix of scientific excellence, industrial practicality, and personal familiarity that creates discussions that are often unusually open, honest, and constructive—even regarding challenges and open questions.
Many participants emphasized this atmosphere as a particular added value: not just technical input, but a trust-based exchange within a community where cooperation is often more important than competition. This personal and open exchange—frequently as valuable as the presentations themselves—is a core part of the unique ICULTA format and is something that can hardly be understood from a program alone, but must be experienced.
Outlook
ICULTA 2026 not only highlighted current developments but also underscored that UV technologies continue to gain scientific, regulatory, and industrial importance as a field of innovation.
The conference has provided diverse impulses for future collaborations, new research questions, and further exchange within the community.
We thank everyone who contributed to the success of ICULTA 2026 and look forward to intensifying this exchange within the Advanced UV for Life community and continuing it at future ICULTA conferences.
